Gears of War 4 trailer is an homage to the original ‘Mad World’ Gears trailer

Last week, a counter went up on the Gears of War website set to expire on Sunday night. The Gears community director said that fans would “have no idea what is coming.” But it wasn’t an announcement of some new multiplayer mode, some cool mechanic we can expect to be playing in the new game this fall, or even a character we hadn’t yet met.

Instead we have the above trailer, aired during Fear the Walking Dead. The trailer features the new protagonist, JD Fenix, running through the forest and taking cover behind a tree as we cut back to memories of his childhood, set to a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” done by Disturbed.

It’s a good looking trailer to be sure, but the hype of a flashy countdown and the suggestion that the result would be something surprising put the trailer under and immense amount of pressure. Instead of being something unexpected, we received literally the most predictable, obvious thing that it could’ve been. As a tribute to the Gears of War trailer that did a similar thing with Gary Jules’ cover of “Mad World,” it’s a pretty cool idea and a great way to establish that we’re starting a new chapter in Gears of War, and maybe even implant the idea that war on the planet Sera is a cyclical event.

It’s just not something surprising. So, if you can put away the hype before you check out the “Tomorrow” trailer above, you’ll enjoy this new teaser for Gears of War 4, set to hit Xbox One on October 11.
