You can now post much, much longer videos on Instagram

Citing increased video engagement, Instagram on Tuesday announced plans to expand the length of videos from 15 seconds to 60 seconds—a substantial jump, and an opportunity for users to get really creative with their material.

According to Jeff Kanter, Product Manager at Instagram, users of the photo-sharing platform begged for video length to be increased.

“We think this will provide a lot of flexibility,” Kanter said. “One of the things we’ve heard from creators is just how much going longer than 15 seconds would help them tell their stories.”

In addition to longer videos, Instagram said it will also allow iOS users to make videos out of multiple clips.

Since introducing video over two years ago, Kanter said engagement has been incredible. In the last six months alone, the time people spent watching video increased by more than 40 percent, according to Kanter.

“This is one step of many you’ll see this year,” Kanter said, no doubt hinting at the imminent change to your chronological feed.

Not only will today’s update give creators the opportunity to make longer stories, but brands, too—something Instagram teased back in February. With 60 seconds to play with, expect to see a lot more videos clogging your feed. Access to the longer video feature should begin rolling out to iOS users today and “will be available for everyone in the coming months.”
