Nintendo says it isn’t ending Wii U production just yet

Yesterday we reported that Nintendo was rumored to be getting ready to end production on the Wii U console. Considering the system’s consistently poor performance and the upcoming announcement of whatever the NX is, it seemed pretty legit. The source, Japanese business newspaper Nikkei, is generally a fairly reliable source, too. Despite all that, Nintendo says the rumor is not accurate.

Speaking to Japanese site IT Media, a Nintendo spokesperson said that the Nikkei story “isn’t an announcement from our company.” They added that “From the next quarter and thereafter as well production [of the Wii U] is scheduled to continue.”

Kotaku notes that the publication has been pretty accurate with Nintendo rumors in the past, though, and Nintendo’s pretty quick to deny anything they haven’t officially announced regardless of whether it’s true or not.
