Every Final Fantasy has to have a “Cid,” even the upcoming cutesy World of Final Fantasy. After all, what kind of throwback game to all of the franchise’s goofiest traditions be without one of its longest running gags?
Only, Square Enix has taken a very liberal route with the tradition of “Cid” this time around, and it is both baffling and makes total sense at the same time. Typically, Cid is an intelligent man who usually works on airships. He’ll be a pilot or an engineer, and he is always great with machines and has a way of granting air travel to the playable party.
This time around, though, Square Enix has scrapped the whole “human” aspect of Cid and turned him into a robot! He no longer has to be skilled with machines because he already is one! And for extra giggles, Square Enix slapped an adorable metal mustache onto him. If anything, he looks more like a glorified trash can than a dependable mechanical sidekick.
The Jump issue also revealed the game’s Ultima Weapon, but it doesn’t push too many boundaries of what we’ve come to expect from the ultimate killing machine. A giant monstrosity that looks ready to end the world in the blink of an eye. No problem!
World of Final Fantasy will be released for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in 2016.
