As part of Apple’s ResearchKit initiative, the company on Monday announced something called CareKit. What is it? It’s essentially a new platform that allows patients to “take an active role in their care.” Here’s how Apple described it:

CareKit is a framework to build apps that empower people to take an active role in their care.

The company showed off a few different apps that take advantage of the new framework, giving patients, family members and doctors unprecedented information about a user’s condition.

CareKit will be available in April.
