Dead Island 2 was all but buried when Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager Entertainment stepped away from the project, thanks to “respective visions” that “fell out of alignment.” However, like the majority population of a zombie apocalypse, Deep Silver’s Dead Island franchise just won’t keel over and die.
The publisher has dug up the corpse of its all-but-forgotten sequel and has tapped British studio Sumo Digital to helm the project. Speaking with MCV, Koch Media CEO Dr Klemens Kundratitz states that Sumo made the best pitch to become the new developer of the game.
“Sumo showed so much understanding of the brand, had creative ideas and an excellent, vision that was aligned with our own. It just made perfect sense for us to move the project to them. We will reveal more details at a later stage, but for now I’d like to say that we are obviously super excited about the progress that we are making with them.”
Sumo Digital’s credits most recently include work on Disney Infinity 3.0, Forza Horizon 2, LittleBigPlanet 3, and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, so it is not a stranger at all to the AAA gaming scene. Sumo COO Paul Porter also made an enthusiastic statement regarding his studio’s new job.
“It’s an honour to be charged with the evolution of such an important franchise in Deep Silver’s catalogue. We’re looking forward to exceeding fan expectation with an ambitious design that we’re confident will take bone-crunching, visceral, zombie action to a whole new level.”
Dead Island 2 was supposed to be released in Spring 2015, but now it is currently labeled as a 2016 release. That’s still a little overly ambitious if you ask me. We’ll be seeing this in 2017, I assume.
