Does the world really need a 23 Jump Street-Men in Black mashup? We’re still not sure, but we may find out later this year. Variety reports that the rumored crossover is moving forward.
According to anonymous sources, Sony is in talks with a possible director. The studio is apparently interested in James Bobin, who directed The Muppets and Flight of the Conchords. Production on the new film could begin as soon as June.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller helmed the last two Jump Street movies, which were both well received. The director duo is busy working on a Han Solo pic for Disney, but they’re still involved as producers.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will reportedly return to star as the undercover cop heroes from previous Jump Street films. However, former Men in Black stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones won’t be involved. Instead, Sony could use this opportunity to relaunch the sci-fi series with young new actors.
News of the film first leaked after the infamous Sony hack. Since then we mostly forgot about the crazy idea, but clearly the studio isn’t willing to let this one go without a fight.
