Johnny Depp made a horrifying cameo on The Walking Dead last night

If you weren’t paying attention, you probably missed one of the weirder cameo appearances by an actor in recent memory.

Note that there are minor spoilers to follow.

On last night’s episode of The Walking Dead, there came a point when Rick, Andy and Jesus attempt to trick Negan’s Saviors into thinking they killed Gregory. To do this, the team of assassins decide they need evidence in order for the death to appear convincing, so what do they do? They pick between three decapitated zombie heads, one of which was modeled after an actor famous for his portrayal as Captain Jack Sparrow.

To be honest, I wouldn’t have put two and two together if nobody said anything, but the Internet is weird and once you see it, you can’t un-see it. Have you figured out which head corresponds to the particular actor? Head number three (closest to the bloody bucket) was intentionally made to look like Johnny Depp.

According to Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero, this was done on purpose though Nicotero didn’t say why. Does he hate Johnny Depp? Is Depp’s career dead? Etc., etc. Here’s what Nicotero told Entertainment Weekly.

One of the other heads, I don’t know if I’m going to get in trouble if I say this, was Johnny Depp I think we had sculpted an emaciated version of a dummy head for something and we used Johnny Depp’s head as a basis just for a clay sculpt.

One could argue Depp’s career in recent years, Black Mass notwithstanding, has seen the actor shamble through roles—you know, like a zombie. The metaphor here is deep. Or not. It’s just a fun thing that happened. The imagery is a little intense but it just goes to show that even celebrities aren’t immune to Rick’s aggressive tactics.
