Yikes! Samsung fast charger said to MELT older Galaxy S4

Maybe Samsung’s new adaptive fast charging technology is a little too powerful. Samsung’s charging tech got a hair faster with the introduction of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus in September, and the tech carries into the latest Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. One Redditor says the “standard” charger included with one of these new Edge products actually melted her old Galaxy S4.

Reddit user “Generictuna” says he or she woke up to a melting Galaxy S4, all because of the fast charger that was included with the latest “Edge” smartphone. That’s presumably the new Galaxy S7 Edge, which is already shipping out to T-Mobile customers, but we can’t be sure.

“Mine is a purple galaxy s4,” Generictuna explained. “He has a new galaxy edge. The part that fits into the phone was melted inside. When my alarm went off this morning, my boyfriend reached to turn it off and when he grabbed at the charger to unplug it it burned his finger and the charger just fell off. leaving that piece in the picture connected. I tried to get it out but it was nasty hot. he has a sweet blister now.”

The lesson is here to probably not use any charger with Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging on a phone that doesn’t support the technology. You can tell whether or not the charger is one of these models by looking for a lightning bolt on the side of the wall wort. If it has one, it’s a fast charger.

This is the first time we’ve heard of something like this, and normally we’d chalk it up to a faulty third-party charger, but this Redditor says it’s fresh outta’ the box. Careful, folks.
