GameFly and LG announce partnership to stream games on Smart TVs

LG and GameFly have announced a new initiative to bring game streaming to the world of LG Smart TVs with webOS.

The word comes from an LG press release, and it’s there that they announce that “LG will provide access to the GameFly Streaming App on the company’s 2016 Smart TV models featuring webOS 3.0 and 2015 Smart TV models featuring webOS 2.0 by adding the application as part of a software update in late April.” That’s right, a software update just under two months from now on newer Smart TVs will make this possible.

LG points to some banner (if not aging) games for the launch of the game streaming application.

With the new gaming application available at a low monthly price, LG Smart TV users will be able to enjoy GameFly Streaming packs, which bundle popular action games such as Tomb Raider: Game of the Year Edition, Batman: Arkham Origins, F.E.A.R. 3, Darksiders and Red Faction Armageddon. GameFly’s library also includes Lego Batman 3, Pacman Championship Edition and WRC4 for families.

The press release does not indicate a separate monthly cost for this, so we’re not sure how much it will cost. However, a similar GameFly app exists on the Amazon Fire TV, and games cost either $6.99 per month for seven games or $9.99 per month for 16 games.

What’s really going to determine whether or not this whole thing is worth your time is your home network speed. Latency can be annoying with these streaming services. The press release made no mention of it, but we’re hoping this thing comes with a free month to try the service out.
