The U.S. military has decided to turn to a unique tactic in order to discover any potential exploits in the Pentagon’s network. They’ve invited vetted hackers to “Hack the Pentagon.”

Defense Secretary Ash Carter offered that he’s “confident that this innovative initiative will strengthen our digital defenses and ultimately enhance our national security.” That came from a statement released by the Pentagon.

According to Reuters, the U.S. Department of Defense has previously tested its network security by using internal “red teams,” a group built with staff already working for the government. Turning to outside experts may bring in a wealth of new information and projection.

The participants will be vetted, again. They must be U.S. citizens, and they will have to submit to a full background check. The Pentagon offered that they will not include weapons systems and more sensitive networks in the initial tests.
