Google taps Vizio for TVs with Chromecast-like functionality

Google’s Chromecast is loved for its simplicity and price. But one thing people still dislike about the little dongle is how it just hangs there when plugged in. While Google hasn’t figured out how to overcome this design hurdle, a new report from Variety says the search giant has come up with the next best thing.

According to the report, Google wants to build the Chromecast right into your TV. The search giant is reportedly working with Vizio to embed the device directly into an upcoming series of TV sets, giving users access to all of the Chromecast’s features without it taking up an HDMI port. Of course, that eliminates the Chromecast’s portability. You win some, you lose some.

Variety says these TVs could be available in the spring, which means we could hear Google talk about this partnership at I/O in a few months. If you’ve never used a Chromecast, it allows users to easily cast content right to their TV, whether it’s a web page or YouTube video. It’s a genius device that’s incredibly easy to use, and it’s cheap, too.

I’d suggest buying a Chromecast before buying a whole new TV set, but it’s neat to hear future TVs will already have casting superpowers.
