Midnight Special could be this year’s sleeper hit

Midnight Special sounds like a name of a meal at Taco Bell, but it’s actually a surprising new sci-fi film from Jeff Nichols that could be the sleeper hit of 2016.

Until the most recent trailer hit earlier this week, I hadn’t even heard of the film. After seeing what it’s all about, however, I’m totally on board. For some reason, it’s giving me a distinct E.T. vibe, just, you know, with a human boy. I’m not really sure what kind of powers he’s supposed to have, but the government obviously wants to figure out what he’s capable of.

Below is the official synopsis, which provides a better explanation of what to expect.

In the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers.

What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.

Midnight Special hits theaters on March 18.
