Gabe Newell hands out free HTC Vives as SteamVR will be natively supported by Unity

Valve took a shot at winning over a room full of virtual reality developers yesterday during Vision Summit 2016. Gabe Newell appeared on screen, as seen in the video above, announced his Oprah Moment and gave HTC Vive Pre headsets to everyone in attendance.

SteamVR will be in Unity natively. To encourage developers to make use of SteamVR, Valve elected to go Oprah and giver everyone a headset.

Smart move, I say. It generates buzz, obviously, but it also gives a room full of talent to ability and drive to make use of your tech to develop games for your platform. Expensive up front? Sure, giving out all those Vives won’t be cheap.

I bet Valve will reap the benefits down the line, though, and so will SteamVR consumers.
