Nintendo’s first smartphone experience wasn’t quite what people were hoping for. Instead of a classic Nintendo experience or a memorable character and a clever gameplay hook, we got a lightweight social media thing called Miitomo.
Talking to the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima suggests we won’t be seeing a repeat of that.
“The second game won’t be another communication app,” he said. “We plan to adopt one of our characters that fans are very familiar with.”
He wouldn’t say which character, but he did call it a game, suggesting that it should be a bit closer to what fans were hoping for.
Miitomo is set to release next month in Japan and shortly after outside, and the third smartphone app is, according to Nintendo insider Dr. Serkan Toto, rumored to be “game featuring top IP.”
Kimishima spoke briefly on VR and the Nintendo NX, as well, saying that more research is needed for the first and that news on the second is coming “not too late in the course of this year.”
