The box office was not friendly to some new releases this weekend, but January is always a rough month at the box office.
1. Kung Fu Panda 3
Kung Fu Panda 3 came in at the top of the box office this weekend with $41M. This is a drop from the opening weekend of Kung Fu Panda 2 in 2011 which took in $47.65M, but still not a horrible opening.
2. The Revenant
Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest film is still chugging along and took in a healthy $12.4M for a new domestic total of $138.17M off of a $135M budget.
3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in its seventh week of release and still int he top five. It took in $10.78M to bring its domestic total up of $895.42M. Combing with the $1.087B it has done in foreign markets it now stands at $1.983B.
4. The Finest Hours
The Chris Pine thriller The Finest Hours had a very soft opening for a Disney film and took in just $10.32M to land in fourth place.
5. Ride Along 2
The new Ice Cube and Kevin Hart comedy Ride Along 2 held on to the top five taking in $8.34M this weekend to bring its domestic total to $70.77M off of its $40M budget.
