iPad Air 3 case reveals an exciting new detail

Apple didn’t announce any updates to its iPad Air series in 2015, but the full-sized tablet could get a pretty big refresh early this year. Rumors are already swirling around the iPad Air 3, and a new leak may reveal even more about the upcoming device.

An alleged case for the iPad Air 3 posted on Alibaba was spotted over the weekend by Japanese Apple blog Macotakara. The leaked accessory appears to confirm several rumored new features. It may also reveal one unexpected detail.

The case includes cutouts for Apple’s new Smart Connector, which the company introduced with the iPad Pro to create a direct connection for keyboards and other accessories. That comes as a surprise, though it makes sense that Cupertino would want to expand this feature to more of its tablets. Other cutouts leave space for that rumored rear flash we’ve been hearing about, along with four surround sound speakers located in the corners of the device.

The iPad Air 3 is also expected to work with the Apple Pencil, though it probably won’t offer 3D Touch. According to one report it might even offer a 4K display, along with better battery life and 4G of RAM. Some of that seems a bit far-fetched, especially since the iPad Pro only offers a 2K panel.

Apple is expected to unveil the new iPad at a special event in March, where we may also see the rumored 4-inch iPhone 5se along with new bands for the Apple Watch.
