According to a report from Retail Merchansider, picked up by IGN, a new game in the Ghostbusters franchise may be in development at Activision for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Merchandising efforts for the upcoming film began early on, and a video game was included in that from the beginning. The game is apparently a “full-fledged” title, and not something like being part of LEGO Dimensions, which recently received a Ghostbusters add-on.
The 2009 game, which featured all four of the original actors voicing their characters, played a role in reigniting interest in the franchise, according to the report.
There’s no word yet on whether the game will be based on the upcoming all-female cast, the original cast, or some kind of new team. With Harold Ramis having passed away in 2014 and the other actors mostly uninterested in the characters at this point, a game based on the original characters seems like it might be tough to pull off. Whatever cast they go with, I’d like to see something less like the guided experience of 2009 game and a bit more like the original game – go way, way back to 1985 – that had you busting ghosts, managing the business, and upgrading equipment. I’d rather pretend to be a Ghostbuster than be guided through another Ghostbusters movie.
Whatever they’re doing, the game is currently expected to release alongside the film when it hits theaters on July 15.
