Apple Watch 2 said to launch sooner than expected

Earlier this month we heard that the Apple Watch 2 wouldn’t launch until September, but it turns out the device could arrive a lot sooner than that. According to one new report, mass production for the second-generation smartwatch may begin as soon as Q2 2016.

The news comes from DigiTimes and its supply chain sources, which haven’t always been reliable in the past. The report also notes that Quanta Computer is set to handle the entire order. Apple apparently considered splitting the production between Quanta and Foxconn, but decided against it since initial volume won’t be very high.

Apple is reportedly scaling back expectations for the Apple Watch 2 after its first wearable failed to ship as many units as the company had hoped. The device still managed to dominate the smartwatch market in 2015, but it hasn’t become a breakthrough hit yet.

Rumor has it the Apple Watch 2 could add a built-in camera for FaceTime calls, a Wi-Fi chip and improved health/fitness sensors. Some of those new features are still rumors, but hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer until Apple actually unveils the device.
