Samsung has already created some pretty great content for the Gear VR through a handful of partnerships and its own Milk VR platform. Now the company’s preparing to beef up its offerings with a devoted studio in New York City.
Samsung wouldn’t reveal any specific details on the types of videos and interactive experiences it plans to create. However, it also announced a new partnership with Sundance Institute to develop new VR films and filmmaking talent over the following year.
The Gear VR studio will be located at Samsung’s NYC office, where the U.S. marketing team already operates. That should make it easy for Samsung to publicize any new virtual reality videos it produces. A Manhattan-based studio will also provide plenty of access to talented actors, directors and editors.
Samsung set up its own showcase at Sundance this year to demonstrate Gear VR to the public. Virtual reality already boasts a strong presence at the independent film festival, but the company clearly sees an opportunity to play an even bigger role in the next few years.
