With both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad all but wrapped up, Warner Bros. has begun setting its sights on another big film in its cinematic universe: Aquaman. That means filling out its cast, and a new report claims Amber Heard (Zombieland, The Danish Girl) is in contention to play Mera, the love interest of Aquaman.
Mera is a big character for a few reasons beyond her involvement as a romantic partner. She’s just as powerful as Aquaman, which means she’s no damsel in distress. In fact, in some instances she’s actually more powerful than him due to her ability to control water telekinetically.
Mera will reportedly show up in Justice League before having a more prominent role in the standalone Aquaman movie.
Heard is simply in “talks” for the role, so we’re not counting her appointment as fact just yet. However, beyond who will play the role, it’s great to hear Warner Bros. is indeed considering Mera as a larger part of the DC Cinematic Universe. In the comics, Mera eventually became queen of Atlantis, though recent changes in DC comics altered that history.
Aquaman, meanwhile, is expected to appear in Batman v Superman, before becoming a mainstay in Justice League, which is scheduled for a Nov. 17, 2017 release. After that, Aquaman will get his own movie in 2018.
