Star Wars: Episode VIII will be “much darker” in tone

Here we are, about 16 months away from the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII, and we’re already getting tiny morsels of information about the upcoming film. Speaking to Vogue, actor John Boyega, who played Finn in The Force Awakens, revealed the upcoming sequel is going to be much darker than last year’s relatively chipper and triumphant story.

According to Boyega, Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII story is going to be “much darker” than what we saw in The Force Awakens, in some ways calling back to Empire Strikes Back, which was the second film in the original trilogy. In Empire, the story saw Darth Vadar grow in power, while our heroes ran into heaps of trouble; Han Solo was captured, and Luke got his hand chopped off.

If you saw The Force Awakens, you know it ended on a pretty somber note despite the fact that Starkiller Base was destroyed. The mood has clearly been set for Episode VIII, and we’ll no doubt see a much angrier First Order following their defeat at the hands of the Resistance.

In addition to revealing Episode VIII will have a much darker tone, Boyega also said his role will be much more physical in the next film, though it’s unclear what he means by that. That could simply mean he’ll be seen running around onscreen much more, or it could mean he’s going to be doing more hand-to-hand combat, which we caught a glimpse of in The Force Awakens.

Although Rogue One is Disney’s next big Star Wars project, we’ll likely hear plenty of big Episode VIII details over the coming months; Rogue One is set for a release on Dec. 16, 2016, and Episode VIII (still waiting on the official title) will hit in May of 2017.
