Those who are paranoid that Final Fantasy XV has somehow been devolved into a mindless hack ‘n slash will be pleased to know that the game actually has two styles of gameplay. Yes, there is a more action oriented approach that will allow for some intense moments, but that is not the only way to tackle the latest game in the long-running franchise.
Speaking on the official forum, Lead Designer Masashi Takizawa elaborates on the two different styles, also indicating that they will greatly determine the game’s difficulty as well.
The equivalent to difficulty level settings in [FF15] is a system where you can switch between different battle modes. By having this ability to switch modes, we want to make it so that both players who like action oriented, technical gameplay and also those who want to fight at a slower, more relaxed pace can all enjoy the combat in their own style.
The changes were added to the game thanks to feedback from the fanbase after the “Episode Duscae” demo released in 2015. Fans who found it too frantic point out the difficulty spikes, and Square Enix adjusted accordingly.
So now, if you want the entire Final Fantasy XV experience, you might have to beat it twice, once for each approach. I wonder which group will get the ol’ chip on their shoulder first: the ones that beat the game the “more difficult” way or the ones who beat the game the “slower and more thought-provoking” way. You know, because there is no middle ground among video gamers.
Final Fantasy XV will launch for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016. Square Enix will be revealing the release date in March.
