Xiaomi surprises fans with a $100 metal smartphone

Xiaomi’s Mi5 is just around the corner, but this morning the company caught us by surprise with another new smartphone. The Redmi 3 offers solid mid-range specs and a sleek metal design for a very reasonable price.

The new phone starts at just 699 yuan (roughly $107). It packs a 5-inch 720p display, a long-lasting 4100mAh battery, a Snapdragon 616 processor, a 13-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. It also runs Xiaomi’s latest MiUI 7 Android-based software.

The metal design isn’t exactly original. It looks a lot like the latest iPhone style, along with many of the other major smartphones announced over the past few years. However, Xiaomi’s Redmi 3 adds a textured back, giving it a somewhat unique look compared to the competition.

The Redmi 3’s biggest advantage is probably the price. At a little over $100 it’s basically an impulse purchase, which should help Xiaomi’s latest phone fly off the shelves. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like this will be the device that sees the company expand into the U.S. market, though we’re still holding out hope that may change later this year.
