Google and other companies that have expressed concern with T-Mobile’s BingeOn mobile data feature now have a strong-worded response from T-Mobile CEO John Legere to consider. The executive recently fired back at BingeOn critics.
“It’s bullshit,” Legere says in the video above, discussing throttling accusations from Google. The company recently clarified that, too, noting that it’s actually “downgrading” video instead of slowing data.
“That’s not what we’re doing,” Legere explained. “What throttling is is slowing down data and removing customer control. BingeOn is neither of those things. Mobile customers often don’t want or need full heavy giant video data files, so we built technology to optimize for mobile screens and stream at a bitrate designed to stretch your mobile data consumption. You get the same quality of video as watching a DVD but now use only one third as much of your data, or of course no data when it’s a BingOn content provider. That’s not throttling, that’s a huge benefit. This is no different than a car manufacturing offering an economy mode option on your car.”
Legere added that he’s “frankly confused why this is an issue” and said consumers love the service and that viewing has increased 12 percent since BingeOn was introduced. A large percentage of viewers are folks without unlimited data, too, which are the ones who benefit most.
Critics, like Google, have suggested that T-Mobile isn’t following net neutrality rules that prevent a company from giving priority to one service over another, among other things. T-Mobile allows customers to opt-out (some argue opt-in would be the better approach), however, which it believes follows the rules of net-neutrality. Legere reiterated his support for net neutrality in the video above.
