This new version of Lara Croft, started with 2013’s Tomb Raider, seems destined for two things: excellent games and slow starts. The original was called a disappointment by Square Enix shortly after launch. That went on to be a success with the release of the definitive version.
Now, Xbox marketing head Aaron Greenberg has confirmed that “well over” 1 million copies of the newest game, Rise of the Tomb Raider, are actually spinning in user consoles and residing on accounts.

There are a few good reasons for the slow start, though. By coming out on the same day as Fallout and StarCraft (what year is it?) and in close proximity to Call of Duty: Black Ops III, the game already had an uphill battle for attention. The blockbuster RPG and huge multiplayer titles certainly stole some of its thunder, though its impossible to say how much.
Hampering it even further, though, was its exclusivity to the Xbox platform at launch. The game is currently set for a January 2016 release on PC, and will hit PlayStation 4 this fall, both of which will likely give the game a big bump. For its status as a platform exclusive, 1 million isn’t too bad. Games like Sunset Overdrive and Forza Motorsport see numbers not too different from these.
When Rise of the Tomb Raider hits PC, it’ll be in what’s generally a pretty empty month, giving it a little extra room to flex, and we’ll see them if it has the same endurance as its main character.
