Happy New Year! Welcome to 2016! Feeling comfy? Own an Xbox One? Looking forward to playing Scalebound this year? Ha! Too bad. The game has been delayed into 2017.

Platinum Games announced that their Xbox One exclusive title featuring a warrior and his dragon has been delayed by a year. Why? Blame it on ambition. The studio wants to make a great game, not a mediocre one. I can get behind that.

Platinum announced the news by way of a letter to the game’s fans on their official page. Here’s the bit about the why and when of the delay.

Development on the game is going well and we’re really happy with how it’s coming together. Scalebound is one of the biggest games PlatinumGames has ever created: an epic adventure filled with exploration and fantasy gameplay, inventive multiplayer, and action-packed battles on an unbelievable scale – all set in a beautiful and evolving world. It’s the game our team has always dreamed of making.

In order to deliver on our ambitious vision and ensure that Scalebound lives up to expectations, we will be launching the game in 2017. This will give us the time needed to bring to life all the innovative features and thrilling gameplay experiences that we have planned.

If you’ve been following Scalebound, you know that an early build of the title was shown off at Gamescom. While it looked wonderful, it boasted a pretty severe case of framerate stutter. Here’s one preview for reference.

The scope and scale of the game could be the cause, and Platinum might be aiming to rein that in as they get the thing to release status.

We’ll have more on Scalebound, including its 2017 release date, as it comes.
