Film Fondue: Which Robin will we see in Batman v Superman?

by Brandon Russell | January 2, 2016January 2, 2016 8:00 am PDT

I thought the news cycle would be much quieter at this time in the year, but it looks like things are just getting started. Even though we’re on the tail end of Christmas and with New Year’s, there has been a lot of new reveals, including information about Daredevil, looks at Doctor Strange and more. Oh, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to obliterate records, and there’s no sign of it slowing down.

This week, we also talked about our most anticipated shows hitting Netflix next year, and talked about Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, which has gone on quite the journey since it was handed over to Luke in A New Hope. Below are plenty of stories worth noting for the future; with the new year here, and several big blockbusters looming, our appetite for all things geek will have plenty to feast over in the coming months.

Batman v Superman and two Robins

A new report from Latino Review claims Batman v Superman will reference two different Robins throughout the film: Jason todd and Dick Grayson. The report claim Jason Todd is the dead Robin hinted at when we see the suit displayed at Batman’s Batcave, while Dick Grayson is expected to get a “shoutout.” It doesn’t sound like either will appear in the film, though there is a chance we could see a flashback of Jason Todd getting killed by the Joker. Is Taskmaster back at Marvel?

Deadpool director Tim Miller recently discussed the potential future of the character on film, and was particularly keen on supervillain Taskmaster. While waxing poetic on the character, Miller finally admitted that the villain is no longer under the 20th Century Fox umbrella, which means Marvel might finally be in possession of the rights. Now that doesn’t mean we’ll see Taskmaster in a future Marvel property, but the possibility is there. [EmpireOnline]

More Ghostbusters details

So far we’ve only seen a few pictures of the cast together, but Entertainment Weekly dropped some new details about what to expect from the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot.

Dead criminals from all eras of New York’s underbelly past have returned to roost among the living in Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot. Pilgrims, old-timey sailors, Revolutionary War spirits, and even a couple of soot-suited gangsters are ready to take on four formidable female busters looking to rid the city of its phantasmic filth.

We’re only seven months away from the movie’s July 15 release, which means we should (hopefully) see a trailer soon. [EW]

Doctor Strange sounds really strange

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed more details about Doctor Strange, and it sounds like it’s going to be quite different from what we’ve seen in the MCU. In addition to a Cloak of Levitation and being able to cast spells, Doctor Strange will have the power to create portals he can step through to easily travel throughout the world. The only real magic powers we’ve seen thus far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe were possessed by Scarlet Witch, but Doctor Strange is going to be much more psychedelic, and therefore quite the risk when it hits on Nov. 4, 2016. X-Men: Apocalypse concept art

New concept art for X-Men: Apocalypse has been released, giving us a glimpse at the kind of power Magneto will possess as one of Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen. In the film, Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac) is capable of imbuing other mutants with greater powers. That’s frightening with someone like Magneto considering he was able to lift an entire baseball stadium in Days of Future Past. [EW]

Rachel McAdams’ role in Doctor Strange

Kevin Feige talked briefly about what role McAdams will play, though he doesn’t really delve too deeply into her character as a person.

Rachel McAdams plays a fellow surgeon that has a history with Strange and is sort of a lynchpin to his old life, once he steps into the role of a sorcerer. She is someone he connects with at the beginning, and reconnects with, and helps anchor his humanity.

It’s believed that McAdams is playing Christine Palmer, who was one of the Night Nurses in the comic series (think Claire Temple from Daredevil). [EW]

Christopher Nolan’s next film called Dunkirk

Warner Bros. announced that Christopher Nolan’s next film will be called Dunkirk, a World War II epic about the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk, France. Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, and Kenneth Branagh are some of the names attached. As of now, the film, which is also being written by Nolan, is scheduled for a July 21, 2017 release.

Check out this cute Finding Dory photo

New concept art for Pixar’s Finding Dory has been released, giving us a look at two characters the blue tang will meet during her new adventure. One is a beluga named Bailey (voiced by Ty Burrell), and the other is a whale shark named Destiny (voiced by Kaitlin Olson). We’ll see these guys in action when Finding Dory hits theaters on June 17, 2016. [EW]
