Owners of the 2016 12-inch MacBook are reporting a strange screen flickering issue when using an external display and Apple’s official USB-C to HDMI adapter. The number of complaints online is growing fast, but it seems 2015 MacBook owners are not affected.
It’s not totally clear whether the issue is with the MacBook itself or Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. However, given that this only appears to be affecting the 2016 MacBook and not its predecessor, it seems the machine itself is likely to blame.
Users say the problem occurs whether they’re using macOS — including the latest versions of Sierra — or Windows in Boot Camp. Many report that the problem appears to be worse when the MacBook is woken from sleep mode.
Some users say they solved the problem simply by blowing into the USB-C port, but others have had no luck with that solution. The issue is also experienced — and sometimes even worse — with third-party USB-C to HDMI adapters.
No official fix yet
Apple is yet to respond to the complaints, despite growing threads on its own Support Communities forum. For now, then, there’s no official solution to the problem.
Apple is expected to unveil new Macs next week, including a refreshed 12-inch MacBook. It is also thought that the company’s next-generation MacBook Pro will also make the switch to USB-C, with Apple planning to ditch traditional USB, HDMI, and even the SD card slot.
