To no one’s surprise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens won its second weekend at the box office.
1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars: The Force Awakens set multiple records at the box office this weekend:
- Biggest second weekend
- Fastest to $500M (domestic)
- Fastest to $1B (global)
- Fastest $100M at IMAX
It took in $153.52M domestically and another $133.3M internationally. It now stands at $544M domestic and $546M foreign for a global total of $1.09B. Talk is definitely growing that it could surpass the $2.7B total for Avatar which is the current global number one.
2. Daddy’s Home
Daddy’s Home, the latest comedy from Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg took in a very nice $38.8M in its opening weekend off of an estimated budget of $50M.
Joy, the latest collaboration from David O. Russell and Jennifer Lawrence, was met with mixed reviews from critics, but it still took in $17.5M in its debut weekend.
The new Tina Fey & Amy Poehler comedy had a very impressive weekend falling a mere .3 percent from its opening to take in $13.88M for a new total of $37.14M off of a $30M budget.
5. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip
Rounding out the top five was the fourth Alvin and the Chipmunks movie which took in $12.7M this weekend, making its domestic total $39.39M
