Mads Mikkelsen, famous for his roles in Casino Royale and Hannibal, will play the main villain in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange movie. According to Entertainment Weekly, Mikkelsen will play a sorcerer who “breaks off into his own sect.”
“[He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through,” explained Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.
While Feige is happy to discuss what role Mikkelsen is playing, the Marvel boss doesn’t actually reveal the character’s name. “No one has quite picked the name that we’ve chosen for him,” Feige told Entertainment Weekly. “It would be fun to conceal that, if we can.”
Mikkelsen has played big villain roles before, using his unique look and gruff voice to add a wonderful layer of tension and anger to his characters. In the TV show Hannibal, his portrayal as Dr. Hannibal Lector was chilling, and there was an unpredictability to him as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale.
Hearing that Mikkelsen will be Doctor Strange’s main antagonist is great news because we appreciate his previous work, and because we have barely any idea what his character will be like. Now it’s just a matter of playing to Mikkelsen’s strengths to create a worthy villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Doctor Strange, which hits theaters on November 4, 2016, is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s odder films, using magic and alternate dimensions to tell the story. Earlier today Entertainment Weekly revealed our first look at Benedict Cumberbatch as the main character.
