A sign of good things to come? Nintendo of Europe has confirmed that the Super Nintendo classic Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars will be coming to the Wii U Virtual Console. Nintendo of America has yet to follow up on the news, so we’ll have to wait and see if we get just as lucky.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the first time Mario starred in an RPG, and Nintendo turned to the hottest RPG company in the world, Square, to make it happen. It’s a weird mix of Final Fantasy and the Mario universe with some incredibly awkward character designs and “non-Mario” move sets.
It also has a really tongue-in-cheek sense of humor with a lot of jabs at the Mario series, probably because Square and Nintendo weren’t really getting along at the time thanks to the Sony luring Square in with the promises of disc based games on the PlayStation.
Because of this, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is one of the strangest games to ever star Mario, but it’s also one of the most fun. It’s already available for the Wii Virtual Console, but any upgrade that comes to the Wii U means you’ll be able to use the GamePad to control it, and you won’t be forced to access the Wii Menu.
Oh, to be free!
