Will the iPhone 7 actually ship without a headphone jack? Rumors that the company could remove its audio port have been floating around for a while, and one concept artist’s design gives us a look at some of the benefits that could come if a 3.5mm headphone jack is removed.
The concept art from German site Handy Abovergleich imagines an iPhone 7, an iPhone 7 Plus and an iPhone 7 mini. The phones measure as thin as 5mm, knocking about 2mm off the thickness of the current iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Removing the headphone jack gives the device a cleaner, more symmetrical look. Apple could even introduce a pair of wireless “AirPod” Bluetooth earbuds to make up for the missing port.
The concept includes a built-in “Beats Audio System” speaker along the bottom of the device, a 15MP camera that’s flush with the rest of the phone and capable of recording 5K video, and even LED displays. Even more exciting, the physical Home button has been replaced with a non-mechanical version that relies on 3D Touch. The new design also cleans up those questionable antenna strips in back.
The result is a pretty cool concept for the iPhone 7. Even if Apple doesn’t remove the headphone jack, we’d still love to see some of these other changes implemented. Apple’s camera hump in particular is due for a fix, and we like the idea of a virtual Home button as well.
