While I am a huge fan of the Dragon Quest franchise, I’ve never really explored any of the Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off titles. Maybe it’s because I played Pokemon like a normal socially adjusted pre-teen, but I just never got around to it. Square Enix’s limited support of the series in the West also complicates matters.
So many games in the franchise have been coming to the Nintendo 3DS as of late, but I’ve been too thrilled about Dragon Quest VII to really take notice of the upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3. However, this new trailer has me hooked already, and I’m feeling ready to resume my petitioning for its availability in English.
The Joker franchise takes the elements of classic Dragon Quest and slaps them with a goofy science-fiction/monster-collecting element. I mean, who can say “No?” This latest game features another awkward youth who activates a “reactor,” thus sending him on a quest. Sounds like a standard setup to me, but where does monster collecting become involved, I wonder.
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016 in Japan. We struggled hard enough to get Dragon Quest VII and VIII in English, so I think Square Enix is worrying about satisfying the fans’ call for them before focusing on other 3DS projects. Don’t expect it any time soon.
