Star Wars: The Force Awakens breaking box office records on first day

Hollywood was already buzzing about the success of pre-sales for tickets to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it looks like the weekend is going to be even bigger than expected.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now in theaters around the world, and it is already busting records. In the film’s first day in the U.K. it set a new one day total of $14.3M, $3.6M of which was collected at the Wednesday night preview showings. The previous record was $9.2M, only recently set by the latest James Bond film, Spectre.

Other international territories brought in $14.1M cumulatively with France being the next largest at $5.2M. One day records also were secured in Norway and Sweden. The global sales total after two days is $72.7M.

In the U.S., the record for Thursday night preview sales was held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 with $43.5M, and it went on for a Friday total of $91M. Star Wars: The Force Awakens blasted the Thursday night record with a new record of $57M. Added in with the international take so far, the film already stands close to $130M globally.

Where the film may begin to stumble is in its demographics. Currently the audiences are tracking 71 percent male, and 53 percent over the age of 25. These are not demographics for people who see films multiple times in the theater, which has been the key to the highest grossing films of all time such as Avatar and Titanic. While a gigantic opening weekend is a lock at this point, how the film does after Sunday will be the key to its long term success.
