Christopher Nolan’s Batman was a deadly serious character, someone who mostly kept to himself and avoided the limelight. It was an interpretation that’s about as far from the bitter, cold, and angry Batman being played by Ben Affleck in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Speaking to French magazine Studio Cine Live, Affleck revealed some new tidbits about his new Batman, a person who is a little more reckless as a way “to fill the void in his soul.”
While Affleck’s Batman remains faithful to the character’s mythology, we’ll see someone that’s more layered and complex. We’ll also see more focus on the playboy side of the character, according to Affleck.
“He lives that life at full tilt,” Affleck explained. “He courts many women, owns many cars, and parties a lot. He does that as a way to fill the void in his soul. Moreover, past incarnations dealt with a straightforward search for justice. This time, Batman’s reasoning is clouded by frustration, bitterness and anger.”
In a lot of ways, that’s a pretty good description of an evil villain, which is how the character is portrayed in the Batman v Superman trailers. Rather than a tack sharp detective who wants to bring Gotham’s criminals to justice, Affleck’s Batman is much more of a vigilante, and someone who is obsessed with Superman.
It will be this obsession that eventually brings the two characters to blows when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
