Film Fondue: New international Star Wars trailer reveals even more footage

by Brandon Russell | December 12, 2015December 12, 2015 8:00 am PDT

It was a typical week in the world of geek entertainment, with rumors about Civil War, Star Wars, and more. I don’t know how I’ll get through work next week with Star Wars coming out on Friday; people are already lined up! I already purchased my tickets, so I’m pumped. You know it’s going to be quite the experience seeing the movie with dozens of other Star Wars fans.

What a way to end the year, right? There are actually quite a few worthwhile movies coming out this month, but Star Wars will naturally dominate headlines. If all this hoopla isn’t your speed, you can always check out The Revenant, or watch The Hateful Eight. Either way, there’s plenty of quality entertainment.

Check out the stories below, and don’t forget to see what else we posted throughout the week at the foot of this post.

Ant-Man and the Wasp details

Speaking to CBR, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed said the sequel will try something new, moving on from the “heist” genre of the first film. “For Ant-Man and the Wasp, we have an entirely different template,” Reed said. “We know what that template is, and we have an entirely different genre template for that movie.” What that template is, according to Reed, will remain a surprise. Star Trek Beyond teaser

We haven’t seen much from this film since its announcement, and I’d attribute that to this year’s Star Wars mania. However, that won’t stop Paramount from showing the film’s first teaser when The Force Awakens is released next Friday. Whether it’ll hit the Internet before that remains to be seen. Star Wars Episode VIII enters production

With the release of Episode VII just over the horizon, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed principal photography for Episode VIII is set to kick off next month. I’m sure shortly after that we’ll see set photos, pictures and more throughout 2016. The Star Wars machine will never stop. [JediNews]

Why isn’t Leia a Jedi?

While speaking to IGN, Star Wars director J.J. Abrams revealed why Leia chose not to become a Jedi.

“Simply it was a choice that she made,” Abrams said. “That her decision to run the Rebellion, and ultimately this Resistance, and consider herself a General as opposed to a Jedi, it was simply a choice that she took. Not that there’s any regret that she could have and didn’t.”

Abrams went on to say Leia is still Force-strong, and that will remain a part of her character. [IGN]

New Star Wars pictures!

Check out these new images of Chewie, General Hux, BB-8 and more.

Spider-Man and Ant-Man in Civil War

When discussing the inclusion of Ant-Man and Spider-Man in Civil War, co-director Anthony Russo said their involvement will add some much-needed levity, and help deliver some of the movie’s lighter moments. Considering the themes and subject matter of the film, any more humorous touches will be hugely welcome.

In a different report, actor Tom Holland, who is playing Spider-Man, said he’s barely in the movie at all, and was only involved in filming for one or two weeks. Holland said he knows so little about Civil War that he doesn’t even really know what his role is. OK!!! [FilmSchoolRejects]

Mission Impossible 6 sets a returning character

Along with Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie, it’s being reported that Rebecca Ferguson is also going to return for the next film. That’s great news, because Ferguson was easily one of the best parts of Part 5. [ShowBiz]

More Kylo Ren information

Writer Lawrence Kasdan revealed that Kylo Ren is going to be an incredibly fragile character in The Force Awakens. “What you’re getting is all the contradictions and the conflict that people feel, any one of us can feel at any moment,” Kasdan said. “That’s what’s so amazing about it and I think that’s what’s unique about what Adam [Driver] has done. The Legend of Tarzan trailer

The Jungle Book isn’t the only live-action reboot coming out next year. The first trailer for The Legend of Tarzan has been released, and it looks maybe not so bad? I can’t tell, but one thing is for sure: Alexander Skarsgard looks like he lifts weights. What has he been doing out in the jungle all this time?

Billie Lourd looks familiar in Star Wars photos

The first photos of Billie Lourd’s character from Star Wars: The Force Awakens have popped up, and she’s looking pretty familiar; Lourd is the real-life daughter of actress Carrie Fischer, who plays Princess Leia. So, um, yeah, now you know why her hair is in that familiar style. [People]

New international Star Wars trailer

Here we have a new international trailer that reveals quite a few new scenes. Well, maybe not new scenes, but extended looks at footage we’ve previously seen. Anyway, just check it out, and remember that we only have one more week to go.

Cate Blanchett to join Thor 3

Variety reports Cate Blanchett is in early talks to join Thor 3, though he potential role is unspecified. Having been in both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, Blanchett is no stranger to geek movies. We’ll see how this one develops. Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on Nov. 3, 2017. [Variety]
