Check out this crazy smartphone-powered TV

Most new TV sets come equipped with their own processors and smart software, but ZTE could take an entirely different approach with its next television. The company appears to be demoing a new TV that’s powered by the phone in your pocket.

A pair of new images show the TV, and from the front it looks like a really big Android tablet. The display apparently measures 55 inches across with a 4K resolution and touchscreen controls. It also packs 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

A second picture taken from the back reveals the new TV’s big secret. The entire set is apparently powered by a smartphone, which slides into a special slot in back. It’s pretty crazy idea, but we kind of like it. If you were a fan of the Asus Padfone this might be the TV for you.

This could be a great way to show your friends any photos or videos you have saved on the big screen without needing an extra gadget like Google’s Chromecast to make the connection. We’re not sure how useful that touchscreen display will be when you’re sitting back on the couch, but hopefully ZTE will include some kind of remote control as well.

There’s no word on when this TV might actually be available or how much ZTE will charge for it. It’s possible the company could bring its new creation to CES next month, though, so we’ll keep an eye out for it.
