Apple sneaks iPhone 6s ads into the App Store

Still using an old iPhone? Apple may have a thing or two to say about it. Multiple people have reported seeing ads for the iPhone 6s pop up in the App Store on their older smartphones.

The ad seems pretty standard, showing the iPhone 6s with the tagline “Ridiculously powerful.” There’s also the option to Learn More or Upgrade now, along with a smaller Skip button in the top right corner. The pop up apparently surfaces as soon as you open the App Store, which has some people pretty peeved.

The two specific incidents reported so far happened on an iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s. It sounds like Apple is only targeting those older models, and I didn’t see any Apple ads after opening the App Store on my year-old iPhone 6 Plus.

This is the first time we can remember Apple pushing ads in the App Store like this, and the new feature appears to have slipped in with iOS 9.2 earlier this week. Hopefully Apple doesn’t abuse this new ad platform, though we wouldn’t be surprised to see even more pesky ads pop up soon.
