Exist Archive character trailers channel Valkyrie Profile’s battle system, not aesthetic

Here we are in 2015, and tri-Ace’s classic Valkyrie Profile is proving to be quite the inspiration. Two wonderful games have come to light claiming it as a major influence, and both have borrowed maybe a little too much from its unique battle system.

First, there is Lab Zero Games’ Indivisible, and then there is this excellent little JRPG called Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky. Although, I guess it’s fine if the later borrows from Valkyrie Profile because the same company is developing it.

I played tri-Ace’s Exist Archive at Tokyo Game Show 2015, and I called it the surprise of the show, maybe even my favorite game all around. I’m not so big on the cookie cutter cast of anime characters, but like so many who played it, wow. It can be as far removed from the depressing, bleak, horrendous atmosphere of Valkyrie Profile as it wants.

That battle system is something else.

As for the characters though, tri-Ace has released an entire batch of trailers detailing their personalities and combat styles. Each trailer is entirely in Japanese, but I’m pretty sure you can guess which anime archetype they fall into thanks to their voices. Stick around for the combat in the later halves of the trailers to be impressed.

Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky is in development for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, and it is being published by Spike CHunsoft. No word has been made on a localization just yet, but I’m hoping someone talented like XSEED or Atlus steps up to the plate because this is one the JRPG crowd should be demanding.
