BlackBerry launched its most exciting smartphone in years early last month, and according to early reports, it has been selling well. We’ll find out exactly how well on Friday, December 18, with BlackBerry set to reveal its initial Priv sales figures in its third quarter earnings results.
Priv is BlackBerry’s first smartphone powered by Android, and the only Android device (at least in recent history) with a physical QWERTY keyboard. Although BlackBerry has promised other devices are on the way, the future of its smartphone business will be shaped by Priv’s success — or lack thereof.
According to early reports, Priv has been selling well, with many pre-orders held back due to strong demand. That seems like a promising sign, but we won’t know for sure whether Priv has been an early success or not until BlackBerry confirms its sales figures.
That will happen next Friday, when the Canadian company announces its earnings results for the third quarter of fiscal 2016, which runs from August 30 to November 29.
Obviously we’ll only get three weeks’ worth of Priv sales in this, but that should be enough to determine whether or not the device is off to a good start. After all, if it sold well during the first three weeks, there’s a good chance that momentum will still be in full swing just two weeks later.
