Milk Duds are still fresh on your breath as you step out of the movie theater into the cool night. A brisk wind whips, and your girlfriend complains it’s too cold to stand outside. You’re wondering where that Uber, which apparently arrived minutes ago, is sitting, purring, waiting for you with a warm cabin. You shield your eyes from the bright box office lights, looking for the Uber sign sitting in the window of a red Honda Accord. No dice. You call the driver. “I’m right here!” he barks through the phone. Where?
It’s a familiar scene, at least for me, but it doesn’t have to be. Uber recently announced SPOT, which allows Uber riders to quickly and easily find the Uber they’re riding with. Drivers are being issued SPOT lights that sit on the inside of the windshield and can glow any one of six colors, including yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue or green. The rider simply taps a color on his or her phone, the SPOT lights up, and it’s much easier for rider and driver to link up.
Uber is testing the feature in Seattle right now, and it’s not clear if it’s going to ever roll out to everyone, but it’s something we can definitely see taking off pretty quickly. If you’re in Seattle, give it a whirl while the testing occurs over the next few weeks.
