GameStop says Star Wars Battlefront underperformed, EA disagrees

Two major forces have disagreements over the performance of Star Wars Battlefront. We’ll leave it up to you which one is the Dark Side and which one is the Light.

GameStop started this trading of barbs, stating in its quarterly report that a good many video games underperformed this year, including larger hits like Halo 5: Guardian, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and even Star Wars Battlefront. It even rubbed the quote in a bit deeper with the added comment that the games didn’t even live up to their “lowered expectations.”

Never one to back down from fightin’ words, EA COO Peter Moore countered at an investor’s conference, stating:

“[GameStop’s] comments were interesting and little bit of a surprise to us particularly as the CFO in the call then started to correct the COO [Bartel] as the call went on.”

“So from our perspective I’m here to reaffirm our guidance of 13m units sold in for the fiscal year. There is no weakness that is perceptible yet in the title and I want everybody understand that based on where we think this title is, and based on the marketing beats ahead of us – in particular the movie launch over the next two weeks, we feel very comfortable we’re going to hit the guidance that we’ve given analysts, investors and Wall Street alike.”

EA originally had forecast 10 million units for Star Wars Battlefront by next March 2016, but it increased its outlook probably after the hype for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens took off. It also hasn’t released any hard numbers to show the game is on track or disprove GameStop otherwise.

I doubt we’ll be finding out ourselves for quite some time.
