New Nexus 7 coming in 2016, rumor says

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet is due for an refresh. After all, it’s been two long years since the company released a 7-inch tablet. Now a new rumor claims we could get an upgraded version of the device next year.

According to one Weibo tipster, Google has already started working on the new tablet. The leaker also throws in Huawei as a possible partner for the new Nexus 7. Considering what a great job the Chinese company did on the Nexus 6P, we wouldn’t mind seeing a Huawei-made Nexus tablet.

As much as we’d love a sleek metal Nexus 7 in the style of the Nexus 6P, another Google-Huawei partnership is far from confirmed. It’s just as likely that ASUS, which designed the first two 7-inch slates, will stick around for a third model. In a recent interview, ASUS CEO Jonney Shih even teased the device, saying we should all “stay tuned.”

Despite all this growing speculation, we’re still not convinced Google will actually release a new Nexus 7 anytime soon. The Nexus 6P and the Nexus 6 before it suggest the company is more interested in plus-sized smartphones than smaller slates. Then again, there’s probably still a core group of customers who would jump at the chance to buy an upgraded Nexus 7.
