Valve’s Gabe Newell invests in cooking startup, appears in ad

by Eric Frederiksen | November 30, 2015

What’s Valve CEO Gabe Newell been cooking up lately? Food, apparently. He recently invested – his money, not Valve’s – in a new cookware company.

The Joule, designed by ChefSteps, apparently impressed Newell so much that he decided to pour his own money into the company and even appear in one of their ads, above.

The Joule is, according to VentureBeat, an immersion circulator meant to assist with sous vide recipes. The creators of the device offered to do an in-home demonstration for Newell and he said “it was easily the best food I’d ever had.” Newell became engrossed in learning about cooking.

Even if we can’t have Half-Life,¬†at least we can have some delicious, slow-boiled food. I just hope he warned ChefSteps about the “Half-Life 3 confirmed” jokes that are sure to follow them from now on.¬†Watch for Newell’s cameo in the ad at about 1:31.
