Amazon bringing Prime Instant Video app to Apple TV’s tvOS ‘within weeks’

Apple TV 4 2015-13

Amazon has confirmed that it will launch a Prime Instant Video app for the new Apple TV’s tvOS “within a few weeks.” This is despite the fact that the retail giant no longer sells Apple TV — or other third-party streaming devices — via Amazon.com.

Engineer Dan Bostonweeks contacted Amazon via its feedback system using the Prime Instant Video app for iOS to ask whether an Apple TV app was in the works. To the surprise (and delight) of many, the company said yes!

“As we have already succeeded in developing an app for iPhone and iPad, we hope to make an app separately for the Apple TV,” an Amazon representative told Bostonweeks. “Hopefully, within a few weeks span, you’ll be able to see the Amazon Instant Video app feature on your Apple TV.”

This will be the first time Prime Instant Video has been available on the Apple TV. It has been available on iOS for over three years, allowing users to stream to their Apple TV using an iPhone or iPad via AirPlay, but there has been no dedicated TV app.

Prime Instant Video is Amazon’s answer to Netflix, and it lets Prime subscribers stream thousands of movies and TV shows at no extra cost. It also offers a number of Amazon Originals series, including the award-winning Transparent, Alpha House, Bosch, and Hand of God.
