Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Peter Quill’s father revealed?

One of the biggest mysteries heading into Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 will undoubtedly be the identity of Peter Quill’s father. At this point, we really have no clue who he he might be—and no, he’s not Thanos, as mistakenly suggested by actor Bradley Cooper.

And, no, that new report from Heroic Hollywood isn’t accurate either—at least not according to director James Gunn.

Following a report from this afternoon claiming to reveal the name of Quill’s father, director James Gunn said the report is absolutely not true, which I find a major relief. Spoilers suck, and hearing them months ahead of the movie’s release is even worse.

“The rumor surrounding Quill’s parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren’t even close to the truth,” Gunn said on Facebook. “I don’t know how people come up with this stuff, but it certainly isn’t through legitimate sources.”

Gunn goes on to say he expects some things to be spoiled as the film’s release gets closer, and he acknowledges that just part of the business. But today’s rumor is absolutely false, so no need to worry about who Quill’s father is.

“This will be my last comment squelching a rumor until May 2017,” Gunn said, which is when Guardians 2 will be released.

Below, for posterity’s sake, is the report Gunn is talking about.

According to Heroic Hollywood, the father of Peter Quill will be none other than the original Captain Marvel, otherwise known as Mar-Vell of the Kree. When talking about Captain Marvel, a lot of people automatically picture Carol Danvers, who is set to get her own standalone movie in 2019. But many people don’t realize that there was a Silver Age Captain Marvel, who was introduced all the way back in 1967.

Heroic Hollywood goes on to say that Carol Danvers wasn’t introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron because they want to start placing the pieces in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 instead. Mar-Vell’s inclusion should explain how Danvers gets her powers, easily leading to a future standalone movie featuring the character. We also might learn the origins of Mar-Vell himself, which will likely differ from what takes place in the comics.

We’re still well ahead of the release of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, so things could change before then. However, with four different sources telling Heroic Hollywood Captain Marvel is indeed Peter Quill’s father, it’s very likely this is the direction Marvel is headed.
