Star Wars: The Force Awakens—Mark Hamill discusses upcoming movie in new interview

Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker is clearly being saved for the big day on December 18. Despite the numerous trailers, pictures and TV spots we’ve seen over the past several months, not one has featured Luke Skywalker. And, no, his mechanical hand does not count. His absence has been by design, of course, and it means his role will be left a mystery until The Force Awakens hits theaters. But, finally, Hamill has broken his silence, opening up about his involvement.

In an issue that will hit newsstands on December 8, Hamill sat down with Famous Monsters magazine to discuss The Force Awakens, and how it’ll be different from the original trilogy.

“It is about setting up the next generation of heroes and villains, but the fact that half a dozen cast members from the originals can be there to place it in some sort of context, to be there for the historical side of things, I think it’s wonderful,” Hamill told Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. “Young people can see the progression of the characters. I’m old enough to be Luke’s grandfather now, and that’s a healthy, natural thing for people to see.”

The last time Hamill played Luke Skywalker was all the way back in 1983 when Return of the Jedi came out. That makes his involvement all the more special (along with the rest of the original cast), but it also makes his continued absence from marketing materials exciting. We’ve learned a lot about The Force Awakens over the past year, so it’s great that there are still some secrets that haven’t been revealed.

One major theory is that Luke is in hiding, but he will indeed play a crucial part in the overall story. At this point, who knows? All the world will see if this secrecy was worth it when the film comes out next month. Before then, you can pick up your copy of Famous Monsters soon, which includes more choice quotes from Hamill about re-visiting the Star Wars universe.
