New Note 5 units include important S Pen warning

by Brandon Russell | November 17, 2015

Samsung has a stern warning for new Galaxy Note 5 users: Don’t insert the S Pen the wrong way, dummy! The message is included on the packaging of new units as a way to quell any continued backlash that began when the phone was released earlier this year. Some early adopters found out the hard way that inserting the S Pen the wrong way can break some of the accessory’s functionality—and maybe even damage the phone permanently.

Here’s what the sticker says:

Warning!

Be sure to insert your S Pen with the nib pointed inward. Inserting the S Pen the wrong way can cause it to become stuck and can damage the pen and your phone.

In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need warnings like these on expensive gadgets. But sometimes we need protection from ourselves. I wouldn’t be surprised if phones started coming with warnings about trying to bend phones. Warning! Applying severe pressure will cause phone to bend.

Samsung, for its part, told users to read the manual before accidentally inserting the pen the wrong way. But we also learned how poorly designed the S Pen is, so whose fault is it really?
