Super Smash Bros.’ next Nintendo Direct will be its “last one”

Super Smash Bros. has been such an enormous hit for Nintendo that entire Nintendo Direct broadcasts have been dedicated to it. Even with plenty of other big name games in development, Nintendo’s all-star fighter would sometimes be the only title discussed for an entire 40 minutes.

All that comes to an end in December, though. During the closing seconds of last week’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, following the announcement of Cloud as a fighter, the company announced a special broadcast dedicated to Super Smash Bros. will be airing in December. However, a press release from the company hints that this will be “the last one.”

A New Challenger Approaches!: Cloud Strife – the legendary protagonist from the classic RPG game FINAL FANTASY VII – will enter the battlefield as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in the future. Additionally, a special broadcast – the last one for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – will be released in December. More information is available at

While Nintendo will still be dedicating portions of its future Nintendo Directs to DLC characters and other goodies, it goes without saying that Super Smash Bros. has served and played its role well for the console. It’s now more than a year old, and Nintendo has bigger plans like a new console to be worried about. I imagine we’ll be seeing a bigger focus on the NX as we near the twilight of this console generation.

But seriously, Cloud is in Super Smash Bros. How cool is that?!
